DISTANCE

Why is it that some people, you can just talk to and others, you are a million miles away from?

Is it commonalities? Is it a shared outlook on life? Is it a VIBE?

What is it that motivates interest and intrigue of others?

You can't force it. Can you?

Have you ever tried it? To force it, I mean. Don't you feel like it's a little jarring? Is it me or is it them? No offence, I'd rather be elsewhere.

If we look at distance, we have to also look at attraction and repulsion.

Let's look at the extreme level as we described there. Disgust. Detest.

To me, hatred is more attractive because they are drawn to their enemy.

If we define one, we must define the other.

The mirror of distance is indifference.

Attraction. Is the raw pull that some has towards you. They light you up.

You put on your best self at no burden. And that is the tell. The right ones, the effort doesn't register as effort. The wrong ones, being your best self feels like work. You want to be your best self, for them.

This is where the energy comes from.

The interesting thing about attraction is that it doesn't just shape individual relationships.

It shapes businesses. It shapes movements. It shapes families. It shapes everything built by more than one person.

What is a partnership but an agreement to co-operate on a shared goal? Essentially, by working together, you achieve more.

But how? How does this happen? How can it be so in such an age where AI is taking over?

It's not! Taking over what?

What we have around us is spaces, people, animals, insects, plants, wood, concrete. The gases.

When you break the world you see down to an atomic level and then connect the dots all the way up to the top, you see that there are infinite problems to tackle in the world.

We have gotten lost in this idea of money. Money is a mechanism, a currency.

Most companies exist with the objective of making as much money as possible and that's it. They pick an industry because they see that money is there. But what is money? Where does it come from?

You get money by transacting something of value for a quantity of currency with the knowledge that you can exchange that currency for something else you want. That is the basis of it.

So, people get lost in the mechanism and they forget what they want. What is that all about?

If we orientate ourselves. If we direct ourselves to a vision of the world, or the space we occupy, the way we want to see it, then of course we can reverse-engineer that outcome.

It might not be a guarantee. However, if you arrange the conditions in such a way that it increases the odds, then you are pulling the levers of fate your way.

I want to come back to the people who light you up.

When you find the people who light you up in the world. No effort. You speak without filter. There is no hiding behind a façade. You are relaxed. You are you.

When you find these people in your life, keep a hold of them. I'm not saying be a pain or an annoyance. I'm saying be friendly and there is no doubt that they will return the favour.

When you align with people who light you up and build a shared dream, that energy we talked about earlier. That becomes multiplied. You light up the path.

Bring your council of light close to you.

Thank you for reading,
Grant

The Bunsen burner roared its blue flame. The teacher held a ribbon of magnesium in the tongs and touched it to the heat. White light, too bright to look at. Then nothing. A curl of ash that had been metal a second ago and would never be metal again. "That's a waste," I said. The teacher waved it off. He was in his white coat, looking at the classroom. "Energy cannot be wasted," he corrected me. "The first law of thermodynamics. It cannot be created or destroyed. It only changes state." He was...

He had, quite possibly, the most annoying voice I had ever heard. But it filled the largest lecture hall in Strathclyde University and the classes were always full. Think about that for a second. Students have no compulsion to go to lectures. There's no intake form, no attendance sheet. You get those on workshops, not lectures. Lectures were voluntary. Every person in that room could have been at the pub, three pints deep, reinventing themselves for a stranger across the bar. Instead they got...

I've been tossing and turning on this word all day. You might say something was blocking me. Enough friction to impede the action. The friction of not understanding it yet. I wasn't ready to release my thoughts on friction until I'd built some basis for them. So I let my mind drift. I collected. Friction. I pictured sandpaper against wood. Woodwork class. Pushing a block against the automatic sander, shaping it. I made a spoon my mum used for years. That's when it landed. The friction of the...
